Depending on the skin then it varies what can be done be it from using OS compatibility options (mostly if using Windows 10) or the built-in scaling options (double-size for classic skins or the built-in scaling for modern skins).
With scaling, that's all down to Winamp being a custom drawn solution & it not knowing how to deal with things.
It's far from ideal & I get the annoyance in having tried to deal with it over the years but sometimes there's just no other solution without patching the plug-ins &/or finding/making an alternative. Installing into a different folder (not Program Files) can sometimes help but some plug-ins hard-code the folder & it's necessary to run it as an admin (at least once) so that the settings can be correctly saved.
The permissions issues are more down to 3rd party plug-in(s) than Winamp itself due to them not following to use Winamp's settings folder & instead (often due to the age of them) try to save within the Winamp program folder. Given bad experiences with my previous installments of Windows, I am not willing to mess with permissions, and various online solutions to try and get the nagging popup out of the way have not worked.Īnd I'm pretty sure I'm missing some things here - all minor things, but just annoying enough to consider moving on. 5.8 isn't great on that front either, but does win from the other two.ĥ.623 and 5.8 don't support my Logitech G600 media hotkeys when in focus, I have to set focus to something else, as if Winamp blocks it out (and the in-Winamp settings for global hotkey support are not what I'm looking for, as I only want the media hotkeys to target system volume, not Winamp volume).ĥ.666 does support the hotkeys but has some nagging permissions issue, where any changes made must be done in elevated mode because they're otherwise reset, particularly annoying for the Pacemaker plugin I'm using - and that goes paired with nagging warning popups each time I launch the program. Each have their own set of flaws.ĥ.623 and 5.666 are poorly compatible with my 4K display (and believe me, I've tried all the tricks with DPI settings, window scale, font scale and such - bearable, but still leaving graphical annoyances). its learning curve is like slamming in a thick concrete wall at 200 miles per hour with an old car not meeting safety standards while on fire with no chance of survival and the maffia is shooting at you to kill you while you're dead and the wall you just slammed into was of a secret government agency experimenting with dinosaur DNA so now genetically modified superkillers are loose to kill your dead killed body again to death. Layout customization is welcomed but not necessary much, I'm looking for a basic audio player with album- and artist-based tracklist generation ( this section of Winamp) and a speed change function with hotkeys.
It remains more or less functional but it just isn't of this time anymore and it has some minor flaws that can't be fixed anymore and annoy the hell out of me. Winamp is becoming less and less compatible with each new computer I own. I know it's a shot in the dark, but I'm desperate for a replacement.
